Schoolies Week is a three week graduation festival celebrated by Year 12 school leavers from every corner of Australia. The festival takes place after student graduation and for 2011 will begin on Saturday 19 November and end three weeks later on Sunday 11 December, 2011.
Surfers Paradise, Gold Coast is where it unwinds and gives graduating students a time of their life to enjoy and party with friends. The central section of Surfers Paradise esplanade and beach will be fenced each night for exclusive access by schoolies during the first week of the schoolies. Various underage events are held on the Surfers Paradise beachfront including dance parties, concerts and movie screenings. The event is predominantly held on the Gold Coast but destinations such as Byron Bay, Sunshine Coast, Airlie Beach, Tropical North QLD and Magnetic Island are also popular with school leavers.
Schoolies need an official wristband which can be obtained on proof of Year 12 student photo ID, to enter the free Schoolies Hub. The Schoolies Hub area will host a free entertainment program comprising two stages, LED screen, DJs and late night screenings. The hub will be open most nights from 7.30pm to 1.30am.
Gold Coast schoolies who have booked accommodation through schoolies.com must collect their wristband during check-in. Schoolies staying at alternative accommodation or visiting for the day can collect a wristband from the Wristband Distribution Centre.
Most Schoolies base themselves in high-rise apartments in Surfers Paradise, while some venture to the neighboring suburbs of Main Beach and Broadbeach. Accommodation books up quickly during this period, so it's wise to book early to get a good position.
